![]() ![]() But when it comes time for you to restore 1 or 2 files from our system, there is a 30 second window where you are exposed. (2048 bit public/private key encryption securing an AES key, with symmetric AES 128, a different AES encryption key and initialization vector for every single file). The encryption we use is unbreakable as far as we know. What we arrived at is this: we have a full zero knowledge system where your files are uploaded in an encrypted state, and no matter what government subpoena comes to us, no matter what hacker hacks us, there is literally no way anybody can read your files. Since Backblaze Personal Backup wanted to offer the ability to restore 3 or 4 files IMMEDIATELY after you lost them instantaneously in 15 seconds or less, and allow you to access 100% of your files from your mobile phone wherever you are in the world, we had to go with a middle ground. Zero Knowledge utterly prevents this feature. They just want a drive with all their music and movies and photos back on a drive they can plug into their computer. That isn't possible with zero knowledge encryption, and it's a HIGHLY popular feature for people that don't have the ability to download 300 TBytes in 24 or 48 hours and aren't super technical. You cannot possibly browse file names in a zero knowledge system, it isn't possible, otherwise the backup company knows your filenames.īackblaze Personal Backup offers the ability to prepare a huge external drive with all your files (encrypted with drive encryption on the external drive) FedEx'ed anywhere in the world to you in 24 hours (maybe 48 hours if you are in Europe). With Zero Knowledge, you must restore all 350 TBytes (or whatever your particular backup size is) or nothing. First of all, you lose the ability to browse your filenames and restore a single file. ![]() Zero Knowledge sucks for the user experience, it is most definitely NOT user friendly, it really is a profoundly bad UI experience.īackblaze Personal Backup focuses on ease of use, and there are several very VERY important features you lose with zero knowledge. But you have to understand the drawbacks. This is not offered through Backblaze's Personal Backup Product line.īackblaze offers zero knowledge backups, but only through our Backblaze B2 product line. In full zero knowledge, you upload encrypted files, never give the key to the company you uploaded the encrypted files to so there is LITERALLY NO WAY they can ever read your files, later you download the fully encrypted files and apply your decryption key to it. In full disclosure, this is not what is called "Zero Knowledge" encryption. That to restore your files you have to give backblaze your private encryption (I'm a programmer that works at Backblaze.) ![]() Disclaimer: I work at Backblaze and wrote a lot of the Private Encryption Key functionality. ![]()
